There has been recently a considerable increase in the investment around the world in Quantum Technologies. This has produced considerable confusion among the population about what a Quantum Technology implies. In this talk I will give an overview of Quantum Technologies and in particular I will show our progress towards the implementation of a portable atomic gravimeter in Mexico.

Opto-mechanical interactions in semiconductor nanostructures at super-high frequencies (SHF) enables the coupling of vibration and electronic excitations and provides a powerful approach for information exchange between the microwave and optical frequency domains.[1] The control of electronic excitations requires coherent acoustic vibrations with wavelengths comparable to the nanostructure sizes and oscillation periods much smaller than the one of the electronic excitations. In this talk, we introduce a novel opto-mechanical platform based on the interaction of electrically excited, super-high-frequency longitudinal vibrations (3-20 GHz) with exciton-polaritons in a (Al,Ga)As microcavity. Microcavity exciton-polaritons (MPs) are quasi-particles resulting from the strong coupling between photons in a microcavity (MC) and embedded quantum well (QWs) excitons.[2] These hybrid matter/light particles have a very long de-Broglie wavelengths (several μm) and undergo a transition to a Bose-Einstein-like state (a condensate) with extended temporal and spatial coherence at temperatures of a few K.[1] In the platform, the vibrations are electrically excited using piezoelectric transducers deposited on the microcavity surface. We show that the microcavity can be designed to simultaneously confine the vibration and exciton-polaritons in the same spatial region. As a result, the electrically excited vibrations induce a huge energy modulation of the polariton states, whose amplitude far exceeds the polariton Rabi splitting. We discuss the prospects of reaching the frequency regime of polariton side-bands, as well as the use of VHF vibrations for coherent polariton control.

The results of an experimental study of an ytterbium-doped fiber laser with Fabry-Perot cavity are reported. It is shown that operation regime of the laser strongly depends on the quality factor of laser cavity and pump level. If the quality factor is high the laser operates in the regime of noise pulses with random magnitudes and widths, with photon statistics described by Bose-Einstein distribution with a low number of independent states of amplified spontaneous emission; no laser modes are observed. The laser coherence time dramatically shortens, from few ns to tens ps, with increasing laser power from a few to tens of watts. Such a laser can be considered as a narrowband thermal light source. In the case of cavity with low quality factor, the laser operates in two randomly alternating sub-regimes, quasi-CW and self-Q-switching, the latter ignited by stimulated Brillouin scattering (SBS). Probability of each sub-regime depends on pump power: quasi-CW dominates slightly above the laser threshold while self-Q-switched pulsing prevails at high pump powers. The featuring details of quasi-CW sub-regime and its role in instabilities (jittering) of SBS-boosted self-Q-switched pulsing as well as the statistical properties of the latter are discussed.

Efficient production and maniputaltion of single-photons are crucial prerequisites for quantum light applications. Future quantum photonics requires controllable quantum emitters that can be operated on-demand and with the possibility of in situ control of the photon emission wavelength and its polarization state. Among various non-classical light sources available, quantum dots (QDs) outdo with their integrability into existing semiconductor-based on-chip solutions. Here, I report on the first proof-of-principle demonstration of the dynamic real-time control, using radio frequency surface acoustic waves (SAWs), of the optical emission from QDs embedded in epitaxially grown core-shell GaN/InGaN nanowire (NW) heterostructures.
When such NWs are perturbed by the propagating SAW, the embedded QDs are periodically strained and their excitonic transitions are dynamically modulated by the acousto-mechanical coupling, giving rise to a spectral fine-tuning within a ~2 meV bandwidth at the acoustic frequency of ~330 MHz. This outcome is further combined with spectral detection filtering for temporal control of the emitted photons. In this way, both spectral tunability and on-demand emission of single photons is achieved simultaneously. Moreover, the SAW-triggered acousto-electric effect inflicts changes in the QD charge population and its optical polarization.
Altogether, this study opens the door to the use of sound for scalable integration of III-nitride-based quantum emitters in nanophotonic and quantum information technologies. The advantage of the acousto-optoelectric over other control schemes is that it allows in-situ manipulation of the optical emission properties over a wide frequency range (up to GHz frequencies).

Liquid crystals (LCs) are states of matter where the molecules exhibit fluid properties while follow a preferential order that can be orientational and/or positional. Chiral liquid crystals, for instance, can form cubic crystalline structures, the so called Blue Phases, where the unit cells are orders of magnitude larger than the atomic crystals. The optical response of a liquid crystal is related to its internal structure which can be changed by small cues from outside making them ideal materials not only for the well-known LCD-display technologies, but for detection of particles and structures of biological interest, among other intriguing phenomena. In this talk, we are going to explore some interesting facts about the directed self-assembling of chiral liquid crystals and their amazing optical response that can be induced by geometrical deformation.

Diapositivas para taller de coherencia de la luz – Dr. K. Hingerl
A finite spectral resolution and/or an imperfectly collimated beam /and or an (areal) extended light source / and or an (areal) extended detector and/ or a sample with a varying thickness can produce depolarization in any ellipsometric or polarization measurement. Despite these experimental findings, there are to our knowledge no physical models published which trace the origin of depolarization back to the atomic properties. Therefore, in the talk I will explain crosspolarization - and subsequently depolarization by considering the common- not separable- effect between the light beam and the sample, described by coherence length and coherence area.
For inhomogeneous samples with dimensions smaller than the coherence area, the fields have to be added coherently. However, inner and non-planar boundaries give rise to evanescent fields in the vicinity of these boundaries. Parallel and perpendicular field components oscillate and decay differently in the vicinity of the boundaries, therefore cross- polarization (incident s- polarized light excites reflected p-polarized light and vice versa) occurs.1 In inhomogeneous samples the Fresnel reflectances are not correct any more, these strictly rely on homogeneity (i.e. arbitrary shifts of the sample along any surface direction change the measurement).
However, in optics we never measure the electric fields, because our available detectors are much too slow, but we measure their statistical second moments. In homogeneous samples with thick transparent overlayers it turns out that depolarization arises through the temporal decoherence of photons, and the measured Müller matrix (MM) elements are given by a convolution of the spectral width of the light source and a sample property: the thickness of the transparent overlayer.
For inhomogeneous samples, when the sample sizes or structures are larger than the coherence area, then the different local polarization states in reflection coming from different materials have to be added incoherently- partially depolarized light results.2 Also here the measured Müller matrix is given by a convolution of a light source property (i.e. the coherence area) and a sample property: the structure size). For both depolarization mechanisms mathematical models3 will be presented, allowing to predict the polarization response, i.e. all MM elements for periodic structures, metamaterials and thick films.

2 The mathematical formulations- which will be largely avoided in the talk- are given through the coherency matrix / respectively the Stokes vectors, and decoherence shows up by the Cittert- Zernike theorem (M. Born & E. Wolf, Principles of Optics, chapter X.9). 3 K. Hingerl, R. Ossikovski, Opt. Lett., 41, 219, (2016) and R. Ossikovski, K. Hingerl, Opt. Lett., 41, 4044, (2016)

Metamaterials are artificial crystals made of two or more ordinary materials with certain geometrical structure and whose optical properties may be exotic, very different from those of its components. We develop a computational procedure for the efficient calculation of the macroscopic response of multicomponent materials with arbitrary geometry and composition. The method is based on analogies to certain common calculations in quantum mechanics, but generalized to account for non-Hermitian operators that account for dissipation. We developed a modular, flexible package that implements our procedure, we tested by comparing our results with those of analytical theories for simple systems and we developed some applications to optical devices.

Minute structural changes may lead to drastic modifications of the electronic properties of quasi-1D systems. Conversely, a slight redistribution of charge, due to, e.g., optical excitation or thermal vibrations may induce pronounced structural modifications in such systems. This is illustrated in my talk using two prominent examples: (i) Localized photoholes are shown to drive a phase transition at the quantum limit in In/Si(111) atomic wires [1]. It is accompanied by In-In bond formation along the wire direction [2]. (ii) A sp3 -> sp2+p rehybridization accompanied by a lateral Si -> Au charge transfer is demonstrated to destabilize the Si(553)-Au spin chains [3] with respect to a diamagnetic surface that complies with electron counting heuristics [4]. Thermal excitation leads to soft Au chain vibrations that alter transiently the Au electron affinity and thus the Si step edge atom hybridization. As a result, a Si dangling-bond structure hosting a 2D spin liquid forms.
